Black screen with RGB

If I set my scart connections as per NTL instructions - VCR connected to
STB, STB connected to TV - I can't get my TV to display a picture if I
set it to RGB (STB is set to RGB output). If I set it up as the NTL
engineer connected it - both boxes connected separately - RGB works on
the TV. Any ideas what's wrong?
